Review - Nuestras Vivencias Trio and Juggy Rihal - Warwick Arts Centre Recital;

"Coventry-based flamenco guitartist David Shepherd has long been an educator and his new project, Nuestras Vivencias, with fellow guitarist Juan Casals Mendoza, gives plenty of rein to that impulse.

Weaving their own compositions through music written by some of Spain's flamenco masters, the pair make a point of giving an informative context to what they are playing. And with singer and percussionist , Glen David Phillips alongside, they're able to range across the Gypsy and traditional styles of Andalucia to the songs of Columbia and the rhythms of Rumba and Bossa Nova.

But that's only the beginning for an evening in which sounds leap continents while a capcity audience in Warwick Art's Centre's Studio looks on entranced.

With talent around like this, we're truly regionally blessed."

My initial flamenco guitar studies were with performer and author, Marcos (in England) and then with Jose Luis Balao and Manuel Lozano 'El Carbonero' (Jerez de la frontera) in Andalucia.

These early influences created a life-long love of flamenco in all its forms - guitar, cante (song) and baile (dance) - as well as the art of flamenco music composition.

Since then, I've performed and taught flamenco guitar, giving my London South Bank debut with Marcos at the Purcel Room in 1991 and completing numerous Arts Council Tours, as well as accompanying some of the finest flamenco dancers of today.

I've always had a particular interest in composing and arranging flamenco music which has resulted in numerous original works, though I always keep a selection of traditional and modern classics in my repertoire. My original compositions were favorably acknowledged by the great spanish poet and flamenco expert, Felix Grande.

During my playing career, I have have collaborated with many fine musicians and artists, developing a highly professional approach to all types of performance be it at a festival,  theatre - or as part of a wedding or corporate event.

I have performed as 'Sonanta Flamenca' for many years with my father, Tony Shepherd, on cajon. This is now a programme of solo instrumental guitar music exploring flamencos many moods - both traditional and contemporary.

I'm also privileged to work with the virtuoso Tabla player, Juggy Rihal (Masterclass Entertainments) in a programme of Indian/Flamenco fusion music. See our promotional video.

This project has blossomed into 'Fine Lines - world music ensemble' with the addition of top jazz bassist, Wayne Matthews. We officially launched this project on 19th September 2015.

For some years I have been collaborating with superb flamenco guitarist,  Juan Casals Mendoza and singer/percussionist, Glenn David Phillips . Together, we have produced a set of traditional and contemporary flamenco and perform as the group, 'Echoes Of Spain Trio'. In 2016 we released our first album which has been well received by aficionados, BBC Radio etc. This is a highly creative project with a distinctive sound of its own!
